How Percussive Therapy Works on Muscle

A TheraGun is a handheld percussive device that delivers rapid, short pulses into muscle tissue. Each pulse presses in and lets go, which helps tight tissue soften so hands-on work can reach deeper with less force.

  • Warms Tissue Quickly

Prepares dense muscle before deep tissue or trigger point work.

  • Reaches Large Muscle Groups

Quads, hamstrings, calves, glutes and the upper back.

  • Pressure Set With You

Speed, attachment and angle change with your comfort.

  • Supports Recovery

Often used after training to ease post-workout tightness.

The device works as one part of your session rather than in place of hands-on care. Your therapist decides where it helps, how long it stays on an area and when to switch back to their hands.

Who TheraGun Treatment Helps

Percussive work suits people whose muscles stay tight between visits or who load the same muscles day after day.

  • Runners, cyclists, hikers and tennis players with tight legs and hips
  • Athletes preparing for an event or recovering from one
  • Desk workers with a stiff neck, shoulders and upper back
  • Stubborn knots that need warming before trigger point work
  • Caregivers and workers who stand, lift or bend all day

Therapies We Pair With TheraGun

Percussive work rarely stands alone. These services on our menu pair naturally with it, and your therapist chooses the mix for your body.

See the full list on our massage services page.

Deep Tissue Massage

The device loosens the surface layers first, so slow, deep strokes can reach the tissue underneath with less discomfort.

Sports Massage

Before an event, short and light passes help wake the muscles up. After it, slower work on the legs and back helps you settle into recovery.

Trigger Point Therapy

Percussion around a knot warms the area. Sustained hand pressure then works the point itself.

Myofascial Release

Pulses on the surrounding muscle can make the slow, sustained stretch of fascial work easier to settle into.

Assisted Stretching

Warm, loosened muscle often stretches further. The pairing works well for hips, hamstrings and calves.

Cupping Therapy

Cupping lifts tissue while percussion presses into it. Your therapist can use each on different areas in the same session.

What to Expect at Your Visit

Plan for a full massage session with percussive work built in where it helps. Most people walk out feeling looser, and any tenderness usually fades within a day or two.

  1. We Listen First

You talk through your health history, problem areas, activity level and goals.

  2. Hands-On Assessment

Your therapist feels for tight bands, knots and areas that need a lighter touch.

  3. Percussive Work on Target Areas

The TheraGun moves slowly over the muscle at a speed and pressure you approve.

  4. Hands-On Treatment

Deep tissue, trigger point or stretching work follows on the tissue the device prepared.

  5. Aftercare

Drink water, keep moving gently and notice how the area feels over the next day or two.

TheraGun Treatment Questions, Answered

What is TheraGun treatment?

TheraGun treatment is percussive therapy: a handheld device taps rapidly into muscle tissue to warm and loosen it. In our sessions a licensed massage therapist uses it on the areas that need it, then continues with hands-on techniques.

Does TheraGun treatment hurt?

It should not. Most people feel a strong, buzzing pressure. Your therapist starts light, uses a softer attachment on sensitive areas and changes the speed or moves on whenever you ask.

Is TheraGun treatment better than a regular massage?

It is a different tool, not a replacement. The device warms and loosens large muscle groups quickly, while hands-on work finds and treats specific knots and trigger points. We use the two together.

How often should I get TheraGun treatment in Tucson, AZ?

It depends on your training load and how your muscles respond. Active patients often book around training blocks or events, while patients with ongoing tightness may come in on a regular schedule. Your therapist will suggest a rhythm after your first visit.

Can I use my own TheraGun at home between visits?

Many people do. Keep the device moving, stay on muscle rather than bone or joints, and use light pressure for short periods on each area. Ask your therapist which areas to focus on and which to leave alone.

Who should not have percussive therapy?

We review your health history before using the device. It stays off bony areas, the front of the neck, recent injuries and bruises, and we may leave it out with circulation conditions such as blood clots. When it is not a fit, your therapist uses hands-on techniques instead.

Is TheraGun treatment covered by insurance?

Coverage depends on your plan and how your session is billed. Our insurance page lists the plans we work with, and our team can help you check your benefits when you book.
